Michelle Wie, in her first European adventure, will almost certainly see it cut short after an opening round of 78, seven over par, in the European Masters here. She is 12 behind the joint leaders, Robert Coles, Anthony Wall and David Carter, but, more importantly, 147th in a field of 156.
Afterwards the 16-year-old Hawaiian thought that taking time off golf to go back to school was probably to blame' that and the fact that she was five over on the short holes. With the cut likely to be in the region of level par she needs something like a 64 today to make her first cut in a men's event on a regular tour.
At the 11th hole, 206 yards long, Wie hit what looked like a beautiful tee shot, but it pitched just short of the pin and ran into some semi-rough at the back. It was a simple enough chip but badly executed, and she missed from 12 feet. Five-over and in trouble.
"I tried my hardest until the end and that's all I can do," Wie said later. "Today just really wasn't my day, but I think I know what to fix for tomorrow.
