Quad/Graphics to Speed Up Plant Construction

Pewaukee, Wis.-based Quad/Graphics said Thursday it will accelerate construction of its new printing plant in Oklahoma City in a move that will increase the size of the facility and number of jobs at the plant.
Construction was already under way to build the initial 217,000- square-foot printing plant on 168 acres near the intersection of Interstate 240 and S. Sunnylane Road. Company officials, citing demand for its products from clients, said Thursday the company would begin a second phase of construction in about six weeks to add another 311,000 square feet to the plant, nearly a year ahead of schedule.
The accelerated construction will allow the company to add gravure printing capabilities to the plant.
"We are encouraged by growing client interest in our newest location and confident that the timing is right to pull the trigger on gravure in Oklahoma City," said Tom Quadracci, president and CEO of Quad/Graphics, in a news release. "We will bring even more jobs to a city brimming with talent and hungry for a future-focused company."
Quad/Graphics announced plans in December 2000 to build the Oklahoma City plant, which when finished will enclose more than 1 million square feet and employ nearly 1,000 people.
Initially, company officials said they would develop about 217,000 square feet to offer web offset printing by the summer of 2003. Gravure presses were to be added two years later.
Claire Ho, a spokeswoman for Quad/Graphics' corporate office, said the firm recognized rising demand for its services. As a result, company officials decided to accelerate construction so as many as two gravure presses would be online by mid-2004, a year ahead of schedule.
"We're optimistic that the market will recover and when it does, we'll be in a position to meet the demand," Ho said.
Construction is already under way on phase one of the development, a 217,000-square-foot area that will house the company's initial web offset and saddle stitching operations. …
