Whataburger Buys Its Oklahoma Restaurants

Ownership of all of Oklahoma's Whataburger restaurants has changed hands as a result of Corpus Christi, Texas-based Whataburger Inc.'s acquisition of its largest franchisee.

The company completed purchase of Whataco Inc., a Midland, Texas- based company that operated 92 units in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, New Mexico and Mexico. Terms of the deal were not disclosed by Whataburger officials.

Included in the deal were all 19 Oklahoma locations that are primarily situated in the Oklahoma City metro area, Tulsa metro area and in Lawton. In Oklahoma City, there are six Whataburger eateries located at 3600 N. May Ave., 5832 NW 36th St., 1124 SW 59th St., 7640 N. May Ave., 1325 S. Meridian Ave. and 7820 N. MacArthur Blvd.

The company also operates a restaurant in Edmond at 421 S. Broadway Ave. and in Midwest City at 6525 E. Reno Ave.

According to Todd Cover, vice president of brand management for Whataburger Inc., no immediate changes are planned for the Oklahoma City area eateries as a result of their change in ownership. However, he added that company officials plan to review each location to determine if any changes are needed at a later date.

Our most immediate goal is that we are going to go through and survey all of the restaurants from a facilities standpoint and, where necessary, we will be making facility upgrades and renovations, he explained. That's the most immediate thing you might see in the next six to eight months.

Additionally, no immediate changes are planned for local Whataburger employees. The company employs around 25 to 30 full- and part-time employees in each of its metro area restaurants.

While Whataburger Inc. is not planning any new restaurant locations in the Oklahoma City area at this time, Cover said that during their initial evaluation of the metro area restaurants, the company will determine if any changes in locations are necessary to maximize their full customer potential. …
