A misidentified ventilation pipe that threatened to delay expansion at St. Charles County Community College may, in the end, prove the catalyst for a better design plan, a college official says.
Trustees recently approved a general design plan for two buildings that look slightly different from sketches that architects presented three weeks ago. The changes account for a heating, ventilation and air conditioning pipe that had been improperly marked on design documents.
The new design for an academic classroom building shows a wider and longer building than one presented earlier. A small wing at the entrance has been eliminated with the new plan. But the college lost no space with the new plan, said Ken Kalicak, director of facilities for the college.
"I'm very pleased we took the time to physically locate the pipes," Kalicak said. "It enabled us to look at the programs that were requested in Phase II. It is appealing to me that we have a more efficient building and we did not lose any square footage. It's really a more efficient building, both for maintenance and construction."
Kalicak said he was concerned about meeting the construction deadline of fall 1995. But he said locating the utility pipes was a critical first step.
The plans for expansion also include a fine arts building that will hold a theater. The architect and engineering team of Louis Saur and Associates and Paric Construction Corp. presented a plan that will allow at least 346 seats in the theater. The college proposed a theater of 250 to 300 seats.
