Even Cowgirls Get the Blues (R, language, sexual situations; 1:36): Tom Robbins' long-awaited novel comes to the screen with good performances and much of the author's nifty, nasty wit, but trying to follow a plot line causes some confusion here and there. Gus Van Sant directs well, and the acting is first-rate throughout. (Joe Pollack) CHESTERFIELD, CRESTWOOD, GALLERIA, ST. CHARLES.
Maverick (PG; 2:09): A dull, dreary and disappointing movie based on the characters of the classic TV series, with William Goldman's script a dull, soggy collection of old scenes, old jokes and new mistakes. The scenery is beautiful, and the cast, despite a few good moments, seems equally caught up in the tedium. Boring. (JP) CLARKSON, CRESTWOOD, DES PERES, ESQUIRE, EUREKA, HALLS FERRY, KELLER, MID RIVERS, NORTHWEST PLAZA, REGENCY, ST. CLAIR, UNION STATION.
Back Beat (R, nudity, language; 1:40): An exhilarating movie about the early Beatles and the relationship between John Lennon and bassist Stu Sutcliffe. It's got a good beat and, unless the ushers object, you can dance to it. (Harper Barnes) CRESTWOOD, WESTPORT.
Bad Girls (R, violence; 1:39): Madeleine Stowe, Andie MacDowell, Mary Stuart Masterson and Drew Barrymore in a so-so Western. (HB) COTTONWOOD, CRESTWOOD, NAMEOKI, NORTHWEST PLAZA, REGENCY.
Being Human (PG-13; 1:39): Robin Williams plays five roles, from cave man to modern aging Yuppie, in a sweet if shallow movie from Bill Forsyth ("Local Hero"). (HB) GALLERIA.
Belle Epoque (R, language, sexual situations; 1:58): An absolutely delightful Spanish comedy about life and love and sex, with four comely sisters all chasing the same handsome young man. (JP) SHADY OAK, in Spanish with subtitles.
Clean Slate (PG-13; 1:46): An amiable, generally entertaining caper comedy starring Dana Carvey as an amnesiac private eye, although the movie is stolen by a wonderfully wacky Jack Russell terrier. (HB) CHESTERFIELD, COTTONWOOD, CRESTWOOD, EASTGATE, ESQUIRE, EUREKA, HALLS FERRY, KELLER, MID RIVERS, NORTHWEST SQUARE, ST. CHARLES, ST. CLAIR, UNION STATION.
Crooklyn (PG-13; 1:52): Spike Lee's latest is a sweet, slight, sometimes slow look at growing up in Brooklyn in the 1970s. A bit repetitive in the first half, but it really comes alive in the second, when a young girl much like Lee's sister Joie visits relatives in a pink suburban paradise, and can't wait to get home to the raucous family brownstone. (HB) CHESTERFIELD, ESQUIRE, HALLS FERRY, KENRICK, NORTHWEST SQUARE, RONNIE'S, ST. CHARLES, ST. CLAIR, UNION STATION.
The Crow (R, violence, language; 1:41): A strangely compelling, bloody revenge drama starring the late Brandon Lee. Based very closely on the comic books of James O'Barr. (HB) ALTON, BELLEVILLE QUAD, CHESTERFIELD, ESQUIRE, EUREKA, HALLS FERRY, KENRICK, MID RIVERS, NORTHWEST SQUARE, RONNIE'S, ST. CHARLES, ST. CLAIR, UNION STATION.
D2: The Mighty Ducks (PG; 1:47): This sequel does a rare thing. It struggles with a serious theme: the commercialization of amateur athletes. (DP) COTTONWOOD, CRESTWOOD, EUREKA, KELLER, MID RIVERS, NAMEOKI, NORTHWEST PLAZA, REGENCY.
Four Weddings and a Funeral (R; 2 hours): This winsome romantic comedy from the director of "Enchanted April" stars Hugh Grant as a guy who can't commit until he meets the beautiful Andie MacDowell. (EF) CLARKSON, COTTONWOOD, DES PERES, EASTGATE, HI-POINTE, KENRICK, NORTHWEST SQUARE, RONNIE'S, ST. CHARLES, ST. CLAIR.
The Inkwell (R, language; 1:50): A movie that looks at middle-class black families without being exploitative or violent. But director Matty Rich makes a mishmash of the material. (DP) HALLS FERRY, NORTHWEST PLAZA, ST. CLAIR, UNION …
