Bosox Trade Mitchell to Reds, Moyer to Seattle

The Boston Red Sox insisted they wouldn't conduct a fire sale as the trading deadline approached.
But Tuesday, the Sox shipped away two more veterans, acquiring three young players in return as they start to build a foundation for the 1997 season.
First, Boston unloaded disgruntled outfielder Kevin Mitchell to the Cincinnati Reds. In return, the Sox received second baseman Roberto Mejia, 24, and righthanded pitcher Brad Tweedlie, 25, from the Reds' minor-league system.
The Sox then pried scrappy outfielder Darren Bragg, 26, away from Seattle, sending lefthander Jamie Moyer to the Mariners.
Bragg was batting .272 with 12 doubles, seven homers, eight stolen bases and 25 RBIs in 69 games for the Mariners this season. In 1994, he was the organization's minor-league player of the year.
Moyer, 33, was 7-1 (with a 4.50 earned-run average), having won his last three starts. At age 33, Moyer was the quintissential journeyman pitcher whose trade value would never be higher.
The Mitchell trade was one of good riddance. Mitchell's desire to play was questioned when he spent most of the year on the disabled list with a couple of hamstring injuries.
Mitchell, 34, hit .304 with two homers and 13 RBIs in only 27 games for Boston.
"If he is healthy enough to go out there and play, he's going to make all the difference in the world," Reds manager Ray Knight said of Mitchell. "I know he'll play hard for me and give me everything he's got. If he can play five days a week, we're better than seven days a week without him."
Mejia, a second baseman, was batting .291 with 24 doubles, 9 triples and 13 homers in 101 games for Indianapolis. Mejia will join Pawtucket for now, and Tweedlie (1-5, 6.67 ERA, 11 saves for Winston-Salem), will report to Sarasota.
In a separate move, the Reds sold the contract of outfielder Eric Anthony to the Colorado Rockies for an undisclosed sum. Anthony hit .244 in 47 games with the Reds, including eight home runs and 13 RBIs.
