Police Union Organizers Say Recruiting Officers Is Good for Department

Smith, Carolyn P., St Louis Post-Dispatch (MO)

A Hazelwood police officer says his union's efforts to recruit members of the Hazelwood Police Department have upset some but should be beneficial to the department and officers.

The officer, Andrew Mackey, said at a recent meeting of the City Counci l that many in the police department had joined the union.

Mackey, representing Missouri Union of Law Enforcement Local 57, said union members in the department recently had elected employee representatives who would want to meet with the city manager regularly to discuss issues of concern to the members. City Council members listened to the statements but did not question or comment on the matter. Union President Steve Still said that the group was organizing the officers in an attempt "to open the lines of communication between the police department and city officials." A representative was putting together a list of goals and "within the next couple of weeks, we'll know what's going on." The union formed two years ago and has about 150 members. It represents Overland, Maryland Heights, Des Peres and Hazelwood officers.
