Vashon Nips Lafayette in Overtime

Vashon High began Wednesday night's Missouri Class 4A sectional showdown against Lafayette on an 8-0 roll. But the Wolverines ended up holding on for their postseason life in the game played at Florissant Valley Community College.
Trailing 50-40 with 4 minutes 12 seconds remaining, Layfayette rallied to pull even and send the game into overtime. The comeback was in vain, however, as Vashon held on for a 62-59 victory.
The Wolverines will square off Saturday against DeSmet at Missouri-St. Louis. It was Vashon's second overtime game against Lafayette this season. In January, Lafayette beat the Wolverines 66-62. The Lancers were bidding for their second sectional upset against the five-time Class 4A champions. In 1993, Lafayette beat Vashon in the sectional. Lafayette guard Victor Williams had a chance to win the game with two free throws with 3 seconds left in regulation. He missed the first, but made the second, tying the game 52-52 and sending it into OT. When Vashon standout Lamont Bonner, who finished with eight points, fouled out in overtime, the Wolverines' chances looked shaky. But the smallest player on the court, 5-foot-7 David …
