3 Locals File Suit in Wake of Takeovers Trusteeship Imposed by Leather International

Virginia Baldwin Hick Of The Post-Dispatch, St Louis Post-Dispatch (MO)

Three St. Louis locals of the International Leather Goods, Plastics, Novelty & Service Workers' Union are suing the international and its acting president for imposing a trusteeship on them without due process.

U.S. District Judge Donald J. Stohr will hold a hearing at 9 a.m. today on a request for a temporary restraining order to bar the international from taking over the locals.

The locals are particularly concerned about control over their health and welfare fund and their officers' participation in the international convention, which begins Thursday in New York. Last Thursday, the union's executive board placed the locals in the Midwest District Board in trusteeship, and assigned Rosemary Behrman, acting president of the international union, as the trustee. Besides the three St. Louis locals - 160, 161 and 162 - the Midwest District includes locals in Kansas City, Pinckneyville, Ill., and Chicago. Pam Martin, accountant for the Midwest District, said she and two other district employees were fired Thursday and locked out of their offices at 300 South Grand Boulevard.
