Happy New Year, Mr Major! Your government is mired in opinion poll figures that defy belief. No wonder you felt you had to reaffirm the faith to Tory troops yesterday: "We remain the only party committed to low taxation." And to reaffirm the anath ema towards Tory deserters: "Disunited, our beliefs are weakened." You must sometimes feel you have turned into a will-o'-the-wisp, which reluctant voters fear is trying to lure them to their doom. But we bring good cheer.
