THE "FLYING bishop", or Provincial Episcopal Visitor as he is correctly called, is the Church of England's answer to members of the clergy and laity opposed to the ordination of women priests.
He is consecrated to look after the interests of those parishes, priests and people who cannot accept the ministry of a bishop who has ordained a woman, but who at the same time do not wish to forsake Canterbury for Rome. The first appointments in 1994, widely seen as a typical Anglican compromise, helped stem the tide of defections, but did very little to heal the schism that the whole subject of the ordination of women priests had caused within the Church of England. ā¦
