On the seafront, but set back from the road, so that you don't confuse it with lesser establishments, and in the west end of town, away from hanky-wearing hoi polloi. WHAT'S IT LIKE?
An imperial wedding cake of a building, a five-star institution, an elegant old-style south coast resort hotel par excellence. It is 125 years old this year, an anniversary marked by a tasteful multi- millionaire makeover from its new owners, Elite Hotels (the new Dynasty-style front doors aside).
Opulent without any tiresome airs and graces, old world but no longer slightly shabby (thanks to the above-mentioned makeover), where Basil Fawlty lookalikes in blazers can unselfconsciously foxtrot and rumba. High tea is a highlight, and Tory wife types can rub shoulders with Liam Gallagher, Eddie Izzard and Julie Burchill. The Great Hall is a stunning confection in marbled pillars and white stucco; there are two swimming pools (indoor and outdoor), a newly enlarged gym, steam room, sauna, eight beauty treatment rooms and a hairdresser.
Fully 152 of them, including 32 suites and 14 "junior suites", all recently redecorated in neutral, slightly geriatric good taste. All the usual mod cons are included, plus a trouser press for that perfect crease when dancing the quickstep.
