1. THE HOSE

Astracast's chrome Nordic Multi-Professional tap ([pound]546; 01924 466 477; www.astracast.co.uk) has chunky style but is highly functional, making it perfect for industrial-style units or a hard- working cook's kitchen. Choose from a single tap with an integral pull-down hose or a separate rinse-spray attachment. It has a heavyduty shower-head-style nozzle that allows a mix of water flow, from a jet to a shower-like spray that reaches every corner of the sink, which is perfect for rinsing vegetables and filling vases.

2. ON THE BOIL

Quooker's counter-top Modern tap ([pound]770; 020-7923 3355, quooker. co.uk) is brilliant in its simplicity. The tap is connected to a three-litre tank below the sink, which maintains water at a constant 110 degrees. Turn the tap and it dispenses boiling water in a fine stream at 100 degrees. It is also filtered, free from limescale and has a child-proof mechanism. Available in a stainless- steel or polished-, brushed-or satin-chrome finish.

3. THE MODERN CLASSIC

The Phoenician monobloc mixer tap with classic lever handles comes from Perrin &Rowe ([pound]195; 01708 526 361; www.perrinandrowe. com), and is available in nickel, chrome, pewter or gold, with lever handles that can be custom-made in any Corian colour (on sale at [pound]10.80 per pair). The tap has an in-spout aerator.

4. ALL LIT UP

A tap with lighting is a great design statement. Press a button and KWC's beautiful Eve tap (polished-chrome finish, [pound]458; brushed-stainless-steel finish, [pound]541; 020-8675 9335; kwc.
