A seminar to help people in the natural gas industry adapt to events in the world energy markets and their price fluctuations is planned June 3 and 4 by the University of Oklahoma Center for Financial Studies and the Center for Continuing Education amd Public Service.

The seminar, offered as "Risk Management Using Natural Gas Futures and Related Products," will be presented at the University of Oklahoma Center for Continuing Education in Norman.

"The natural gas industry has become a vital segment of the Oklahoma economy because we have substantial reserves of this fuel for th future," said Robert F. Lusch, dean of the College of Business Administration. "Unfortunately, gas prices and, therefore, the profitability of this industry are affected by worldwide events beyond the control of Oklahoma companies. This program, offered through our Center for Financial Studies, is an exciting and innovative executive seminar that will help Oklahoma and regional companies adapt to these events and the price fluctuations they cause."

The program is designed to help Oklahoma natural gas production and marketing companies identify the benefits and risks of hedging, distinguish between hedging and speculation, establish simple and complex hedges to manage price risk, evaluate the effectiveness of hedges and use the futures market to forecast future spot prices.

"Risk Management Using Natural Gas Futures and Related Products is specifically designed for Oklahoma and Mid-Continent natural gas production and marketing companies," said Gary Emery, director of the Center for Financial Studies and associate professor at the University of Oklahoma.
