Are we on the cusp of a big, fat Greek revival? First the big screen account of the Battle of Thermopylae breaks box-office records, then Sotheby's pulls in a record [pound]7.47m in a Greek art sale. It's even sneaking its way into the pop charts: the Canadian singer Rufus Wainwright has based the artwork for his new album, Release the Stars, on a sculptural frieze from the Pergamon Altar.
So it's the perfect time for the V&A to look at how the art of Athens has influenced us. It's put on a show dedicated tothe work of James "Athenian" Stuart (1713-1788), the neo-classical architect and artistbest known for the interiors he created for London's Spencer House. Stuart's 1762 book, Antiquities of Athens, was the first accurate record of classical Greek architecture, inspiring many architects of the 18th century.
