Which are the four or five issues that have most exercised the Daily Mail in recent years? One would have to include supercasinos, 24-hour drinking and cannabis.
In his first month as Prime Minister Gordon Brown has killed off the lone supercasino planned for Manchester, and his axe hovers over 16 large casinos. He has also announced two reviews: one into the downgrading of cannabis from a Class B to a Class C drug three years ago; and another into the impact of 24-hour drinking.
I am not suggesting Mr Brown is being run by the Daily Mail. (I should remind readers that I write a column for that newspaper.) Other papers have also campaigned against casinos and binge drinking, and in favour of restoring the Class B status of cannabis. But has any title campaigned on all three with the enthusiasm of the Mail?
Cynics will say Mr Brown is merely trying to keep it on side. …
