The Paddy Donaldson Awards
This year's ceremony marked the inauguration of a new award commemorating the life and achievements of long-standing RSH Fellow Dr Paddy Donaldson, who died last year.
The Society was delighted to welcome Dr Donaldson's son Professor Sir Liam Donaldson and his daughter Dr Karen Murray-Lee to present the awards.
The awards take the form of two retrospective bursaries of £1,000 to postgraduate students and are awarded for dissertations or theses that address contemporary public health issues in the field of health promotion or health protection.
The first bursary went to an overseas student, Kamika McLean, in recognition of her investigation into sexuality among Black Caribbean men in England and proposals for risk reduction in their sexual behaviour.
Emma Harding-Esch received the second bursary for her study into the use of the oral antibiotic azithromycin in treating trachoma in Tanzania.
Dr Murray-Lee said: 'I would like to thank RSH for commemorating my father's contribution to The Society and feel honoured to participate in this ceremony.'
'The wellbeing of The Society was never far from his thoughts and he would have been very proud that the awards are dedicated in his name. Amongst his various achievements he was an FRSH through and through.'
Members, Fellows and guests of The Society who attended the Awards Ceremony were also treated to a presentation by Laurence Waterman, who was recently appointed Head of Health and Safety for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The Queen Elizabeth II Medal, which is awarded annually to individuals who make an outstanding achievement in public health in the Commonwealth, was this year presented to Professor Errol Morrison, in recognition of his 'truly international contribution' to furthering understanding and awareness of diabetes worldwide.
