Citizenship is bound in the principles of democracy and good government. In a fast changing globalised context, pressure for understanding different cultures, valuing one's own culture and retaining democratic principles is becoming greater. Citizenship education aims at balancing the rise of xenophobia, racism and cultural intolerance. The book is divided into two sections: one section deals with the themes and recommendation from the seminar and the other section reproduces selected papers presented at the seminar. The annexes provide the seminar programme and list of seminar participants.
The Seminar comprised the following themes:
* Why citizenship education?
* What is meant by citizenship education?
* How can citizenship education be achieved?
* Curriculum as policy, structure and content
* Challenges facing citizenship education and curriculum renewal
* Appropriate pedagogy for citizenship education
* Aspects of collaboration and networking.
The recommendation was for a concept paper based "on a common understanding on a shared vision for designing a common framework for Heritage, Multiculturalism and Citizenship Education" (pp 37). …
