John Neumeier's Hamburg Ballet Festival

Years ago, having followed the career of the American-born dancer/choreographer John Neumeier from Stuttgart to Frankfurt to Hamburg, I described him for Dance magazine as a "prophet without honor in his own country," as he was then still virtually unknown in the United States. Today, however, John Neumeier has proved to be not only a prophet with his innovative choreographies and his training of outstanding dancers but he has also become that rarest of beings, a legend in his own time. In fact, the full title of his Hamburg ensemble is the Hamburg Ballet John Neumeier. The Hamburg Opera, in contrast, does not feature the name of its artistic director.
