Agri-Entrepreneurship Education: A Renewal

Entrepreneurship is emerging as a new priority in agricultural education. This renewal is embracing a new definition of entrepreneurship and new approaches to instruction. The traditional notion of entrepreneurship defined as "starting, owning and running an enterprise" is giving way to a marketing-oriented concept. The role of management continues to be important to the long-term success of an entrepreneurship activity, however.
The renewal represents a collaborative effort been agricultural education and the private sector. The National Council for Agricultural Education and the National FFA Foundation have joined with the Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership (CEL) of the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation to enhance agriculture entrepreneurship education.
As described by CEL Vice President Marilyn Kourilsky, "entrepreneurship is the identification and pursuit of market opportunity in the face of risk that may result in new business and/or products or services." Long-term success requires continued attention to management functions but the emphasis is on creativity and leadership skill development.
