UMI, Dow Jones in Long-Term Alliance

The result is a win-win situation for two major information distributors
Last month, we reported on the changing marketing strategies at UMI, with a reemphasis on the academic, public, and government libraries markets, a launch into the growing K-12 education market, and a definite fall back from competing in the corporate market. Specifically, the company said it would "no longer compete directly with the likes of Dow Jones ..." and that it would be pursuing partnerships to repackage UMI content.
Well, it has managed to work out a strategic alliance with Dow Jones that looks to be a real coup for both companies.
A Three.Part Agreement UMI and Dow Jones Interactive Publishing (DJIP) have announced that they signed a three-part agreement designed to expand access to information to their customers. Building on a relationship that dates back almost 30 years, UMI gains broadened, exclusive rights to incorporate Dow Jones publications in its full range of library research services. At the same time, Dow Jones gains rights to text and full-page images from thousands of publications from UMI (see related story on Dow Jones Interactive on page 1).
The first agreement gives. UMI exclusive worldwide rights to distribute the content of Dow Jones' print publications as part of the ProQuest Direct online service to 4-year college, university, and junior college libraries (academic markets); school libraries; public libraries; and selected government libraries. Dow Jones' content that will be offered online to customers in UMI's library and school markets includes The Wall Street Journal, Barron's, Far Eastern Economic Review, and other publications.
