With the assistance of some remarkable software and an Internet link, a thoughtful and creative teacher can keep all students on task and up-to-speed with their classmates. Here are a few of the sites we use at the Henry Barnard School.
smarthinking.com is an online tutoring service for students in the United States and abroad and is used 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This live online tutoring service allows you to ask questions and get feedback at any time of the day without the hassle of making appointments and adjusting your schedule to the tutor. Subjects range from biology, physics, and chemistry to math and more. SMARTHINKING even has a feature that allows students to submit their essays for review.
www.iclicker.com is a response system that allows students the option of interacting in large lecture classrooms. The professor can ask numerous questions, and the students can provide their answers with the click of a button. The i-clicker is similar to the function of a remote control that uses high frequency to send a response to the instructors' receiver. From then on, the answers for the whole class can be viewed immediately. Other teachers save the students' individual responses and grade them based on the correct answers, which can then be uploaded to the blackboard. This device is becoming more and more popular in institutions all over the U.S. and beyond.
Penguin Jump Multiplication is an interactive game where students can test and further improve their multiplication skills. This creative game allows four players to play at a time, and students have the option to play with players from around the world - or they could choose to play with their friends. In this game, students need to return their penguins back home by jumping on the iceberg that has the correct answer to the question asked. At the end of the game, the students find out their time and get a printable trophy.
Smarttech.com is software that allows teachers to build interactive lessons using fun and creative pictures, videos, and animations. This software also allows instructors to join a community to collaborate with other teachers to share ideas, stories, and lessons. Besides using the SMART notebook software, learning can be more interesting to students with the addition of other SMART tech products such as the SMART document camera, which adds 3D content to lessons.
