With the recent court decision that his lieutenant governor running mate Hunter Bates did not meet the state's constitutional requirement of six-year residency, (see "Politics, '03," March 31, Page 14), Kentucky GOP gubernatorial hopeful Rep. Ernie Fletcher was forced to choose a new candidate to share his ticket in the May 20th Republican primary. His pick was a surprise: Stephen Pence, U.S. attorney for the Western District of Kentucky. Pence is known less for Republican political activity than for spearheading probes into corruption in state government, which has earned him the nickname "Kentucky's Giuliani."
