THROUGHOUT 1998, EARNINGS reports from financial services companies have generally disappointed analysts and investors. Primary reasons given for lackluster performance are turmoil in global markets and domestic rate volatility leading to losses, write-downs and additional reserves. In many cases, apparently, market forces combined with poor internal warning mechanisms to produce a situation in which risk rapidly outran opportunity. Business managers in these scenarios found themselves unprepared for the sudden impact, stemming from ineffective or inadequate management of risk.
