Donna Ramsey It might be a conversation between two people or the way someone is sitting in a caf6 that gets Donna Ramsey's creative gears turning. "I like people caught in a moment," says the artist, who creates painterly, realistic portrayals of people such as women having tea or dressing for dinner before a full-length mirror. Once the seed of an idea is planted, she says, it takes on a life of its own. Working from both photographs and models, Ramsey creates her own scene, striving for solid form and realistic emotion and gesture. "It's important to me that it read right," she says.
Ramsey majored in art and philosophy at Michigan State University before beginning a career doing architectural renderings, which she says helped her understand perspective and scale. Though she took figurative painting classes in college, painting people didn't interest Ramsey then as it does now. It was during a life-drawing class at the Scottsdale Artists' School that her appreciation of depicting the human form emerged. Influenced greatly by her mentor, figure painter Milt Kobayashi, she has been painting full time for 10 years. Ramsey is represented by Meyer Gallery, Scottsdale, AZ, and Santa Fe, NM, and Taos Gallery, Taos, NM.
Painter Michael Malm draws inspiration for his work from the small farming community of Wellsville, UT, where he lives with his wife and son. "I love the old farm communities, the grazing animals and wide open fields," he says. "There is something peaceful about these settings."
