Code Green: Money-Driven Hospitals and the Dismantling of Nursing

Miller, Margaret M., Nursing Education Perspectives

Code Green: Money-Driven Hospitals and the Dismantling of Nursing by Dana Beth Weinberg and Suzanne Gordon; Ithaca, NY: Cornell University Press, 2003; 240 pages, $25.00 (paperback, 2004, $17.95)

Staff nurses, nurse managers, nursing faculty, and hospital administrators will find this book immensely interesting. As increased financial pressures have caused many health care institutions to restructure during the past 10 years, most nurses and administrators will recognize, and identify with, the experiences summarized in this book.

Dana Weinberg, a sociology researcher, uses the work of well-known nurse researchers Linda Aiken and ju lie Sochalski as background information for her study. Code Green was written after nine months of intensive field research at Boston's Beth Israel Hospital and New England Deaconess Hospital. Weinberg collected data as she shadowed nurses on six different medical-surgical units, attended staff meetings, interviewed numerous nurses and administrators, recorded the results of focus groups, analyzed surveys, and studied internal hospital reports and documents.

The writing style, the narrative reporting of nurses' experiences, the observations and perspectives of nurse managers and administrators, all capture the reader's interest. In fact, the first few chapters of this book read like a "who dunnit," causing the reader to ask, "How could this have happened?"

The book is organized as a sociological research report.
