The text used for this translation is that published in the Folio series by Gallimard ( 1971), which follows that of the Furne edition ( 1842-8), corrected by Jean Ducourneau in his edition of 1966 and by Pierre-Georges Castex in his of 1963. The main difference from the Furne edition is the division of the novel into sections, as in the original edition of 1834-5, which Furne suppressed for reasons of economy of space but which Balzac is said to have wanted.
