EXPLANATORY NOTES
rue Neuve-Sainte-Geneviève: now the rue Tournefort.
All is true: the subtitle to Henry VIII ( 1613), attributed to Shakespeare; in English, for emphasis, in the original.
treatment: the Hospital for Venereal Diseases was in the rue Saint-Jacques nearby. Voltaire: Voltaire left Paris in 1750, for Potsdam and then Ferney, near Geneva, returning to a triumphal welcome only a few months before his death in May 1778. He composed the distich quoted for his friend des Maisons.
Télélmaque: a didactic novel (published 1699) by Fraņois de la Mothe-Fénélon , written for Louis XIV's grandson, whose tutor he was, and recounting the adventures of Telemachus, Ulysses' son. The nymph Calypso also figures in the Odyssey.
Georges or Pichegru: Georges, alias Cadoudal, a royalist leader, and Pichegru, a former revolutionary general, joined in conspiracy against Napoleon, and were finally betrayed, arrested, and executed in 1804. The implication here is that political, or other principles, always came second to money for Madame Vauquer.

Pére Goriot: see Introduction, p. xiv.

Bourbe: rue de la Bourbe, now part of the boulevard de Port-Royal.
sons of Japhet: Japhet was Noah's son, progenitor of what are now called (at least in America) Caucasians.

as in the Fable: "The Monkey and the Cat" by La Fontaine ( 1621-95), Fables, ix. 16.

louis: at the time the gold louis was worth 20 francs (or livres).
