Dr. Rokeach was involved with the group that did the seminal work on the Authoritarian personality. His doctoral dissertation was a study of the relationship between rigidity in thinking and ethnocentrism. The authoritarian. Personality work evoked criticisms of a nature that persuaded Dr. Rokeach to try and build a structural foundation for such concepts, which would be broader, more basic and nonideological. In testing qualities such as prejudice with questions designed to elicit the quality no matter what its manifestations, he collected some surprising results, results that are still difficult for some of his critics to accept. Pursuing his interest in belief systems as they relate to human dissonance, he brought together three mental patients, all of whom thought they were Jesus Christ.
