A Personnel Selection Approach to Industrial Safety

Work-related accidents, ranging from slips and falls to motor vehicle mishaps, cost employers billions of dollars every year ( National Safety Council, 1983). They threaten the company's profitability due to lost production, disability payments, and higher insurance premiums ( Huber, 1987). This chapter focuses on the personnel selection approach to safety, an approach that allows employers to screen job applicants for safety-sensitive positions. It reviews two personnel selection inventories developed for companies needing to staff a wide variety of safety-sensitive positions.


PERSONNEL SELECTION INVENTORY: SAFETY VERSION

The personnel selection approach allows employers to screen job applicants for positions where on-the-job injuries are easily incurred if proper safety rules and precautions are not followed. High-accident-risk applicants can be identified and screened out. Applicants identified as high risks for accidents due to individual differences in attitudes and personality can also be placed in less hazardous jobs or placed in special safety training programs designed to reduce their susceptibility to accidents. This chapter focuses on the assessment of attitudes and personality traits that research has shown are associated with differential accident susceptibility.
