|JOHN BARTH is the author of one of the most influential volumes of metafictional short stories: Lost in the Funhouse: Fiction for print, tape, live voice ( 1968). On with the Story: Stories ( 1996) is his most recent collection of short fiction. His three linked novellas are titled Chimera ( 1972), and his novels include Giles Goat Boy ( 1966), The Sot-Weed Factor ( 1967), Letters. A Novel ( 1979), Sabbatical: A Romance ( 1982), The Tidewater Tales: A Novel ( 1987), and The Last Voyage of Somebody the Sailor ( 1991). Although he has retired from teaching writing seminars at Johns Hopkins University, Barth continues to live and write in the tidewater country of Maryland.|
|ROGER BERGER is an Associate Professor of English at The Wichita State University. His doctoral dissertation, "Telling Stories: Transformation of the Twentieth-Century American Short Story," examines the changes in the modern short story between modernism and postmodernism. Berger has published essays on contemporary American, African, and postcolonial literatures, and on anthropology. He is currently completing a book titled Black Comedy. BREWER is a cognitive psychologist currently carrying out research in five broad areas: knowledge acquisition, knowledge representation, human memory, the structure of discourse, and the psychology of science. A Professor of Psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, he has developed a theory of stories for researchers in the cognitive sciences that attempts to capture many of the insights of work carried out in the humanities. Brewer and his colleagues have used this structural-affect theory to study American and Hungarian short stories, fables, artificially constructed texts, children's responses to texts, and cross-cultural characteristics of texts.
