The original inspiration for this book comes from my parents, Sarah and Max Shuldiner, who raised me in the milieu of the Jewish Left subculture to which I returned for this study. I would like to thank Thomas O. Blank, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Human Development and Family Studies at the University of Connecticut, for providing sage counsel to me in my exploration of political activism and aging as a student of gerontology and later as a colleague. My editors at Greenwood Publishing Group, Lynn Flint and Ann Newman, have been as helpful and "author friendly" as I could have hoped for. I must also thank my British comrade and colleague, Tom Beardsley, who rescued me at the eleventh hour with his impressive formatting skills. Finally, much gratitude is due to my life partner, Anne Schick, who has made life all the more worth exploring.
