Many of the contributions to this volume resulted from a conference, "Energy and the Environment in the 1990s," that was sponsored by the Graduate School of Management of Kent State University on April 5, 1990. Some were prepared expressly for this volume. Although the conference was the catalyst that generated much of the research contained here, every effort has been made to make the volume more than just a report of conference proceedings.
Most of the papers chosen from the conference have been reworked for publication. All are largely the result of original research. The conference was supported in large part by funding from Kent State University's portion of Ohio's Urban University Program. I am especially grateful to James Tinnin, Director of Kent State's Urban University Program, for his assistance in obtaining that funding, as well as his continuing support throughout the project.
The project could not have been successfully concluded without the support of Dean Charles Upton and Acting Assistant Dean Frederick Schroath of the Graduate School of Management.
The editing and production of the manuscript were greatly facilitated by the efforts of Linda Poje. Two colleagues, Eng Seng Loh and Randall Mount, provided valuable advice during the editing of the manuscript but cannot be blamed for the result.
