the purposes of the post- Deng leadership. If the oldest Chinese philosophy zhongyong zhidao (the doctrine of the mean) has always worked in China, the question that remains to be answered is whether Deng Xiaoping Theory is such a "doctrine of the mean." If zhongyong zhidao does not necessarily mean the combination of any two ideologies, could Deng Xiaoping Theory be the blueprint and the new matrix? Probably the most important practical question is: Would the Chinese go where the CCP wants to lead?
