Trademark Counterfeiting, Product Piracy, and the Billion Dollar Threat to the U.S. Economy originally began as a series of articles. I was encouraged to continue with the writing by the publishers of P.I., Electronics Now, World and I, and Soundtrack Journal. They published articles that would later be incorporated into the present book. I am especially indebted to private investigator David Woods and the publisher of P.I. for "Designer Counterfeiting"," which appeared in the Spring 1992 issue of P.I. and would eventually be the stepping-stone for everything that followed.
Many other people offered generous support and assistance in the preparation of this book. I am especially indebted to Stephanie Mitchell and the general counsel's office at the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) for reviewing the chapter in this book on the trade dispute with the Chinese.
I would like to thank the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), the International AntiCounterfeiting Coalition (IACC), and the Business Software Alliance (BSA) for the considerable assistance these trade groups provided me with. I interviewed numerous people in this book and I would like to thank each and every one for their time and comments. Finally, I would like to thank my father, who kept this project afloat financially during a difficult time.
