BLACK-ORIENTED AND BLACKCONTROLLED THEATRES, HALLS, AND PERFORMANCE SPACES
Following is a list of some two hundred black-controlled or black-oriented theatres. This list is divided into two parts. Part I includes those theatres, auditoriums, halls, and other performance spaces that have been cited in the main body of this directory. Part II is a list of other theatres that have not been included because of space limitations. These lists do not include companies and theatre groups calling themselves theatres as a part of their titles [e.g., AMERICAN NEGRO TH.]. For such companies and theatre groups, see appendix B. Where possible, specific dates of opening and closing of the following theatres and performance spaces have been provided. However, in most cases, this has not been possible, and usually only conjectural dates are given, either by using c. (for circa) or by indicating general time frames (such as early 1900s, 1910s-1920s, etc.). Famous and historically significant theatres have been marked with a star (★). Other important or noteworthy theatres have been marked with a black dot or bullet (•).
