Theresa Chavez is a writer, director, producer, and interdisciplinary artist with a background and training in performance/theatre, dance, photography, music/ voice, and the social sciences. She received an interdisciplinary BA in the social sciences from UCLA in 1979. This was followed by a BFA and an MFA in photography from the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia.
Chavez served as assistant to the artistic director of the Los Angeles Theatre Center and with the Latino Theatre Lab of the Los Angeles Theatre Center. In 1987 she became a cofounder and artistic codirector of About Productions, a nonprofit interdisciplinary arts organization which produces works challenging traditional assumptions about history, gender, and cultural and sexual identity.
Her photographic and curatorial work has appeared in various art spaces including the International Arts Relations (INTAR) Gallery in New York, the Los Angeles Center for Photographic Studies, Beyond Baroque, and others. As an associate with Community Arts Resources (CARS), Chavez helps in the management and production of festivals (Santa Monica Arts Festival), concerts, art bus tours, and conferences. Chavez is active on numerous arts committees and advisory groups that promote the work of women and multicultural artists.
Theresa Chavez is currently on the faculty of the School of Art and School of Film at the California Institute of the Arts where she teaches courses in the interdisciplinary, collaborative process, performance art, and interdisciplinary critique.
Theresa Chavez's work encompasses a wide range of topics and issues that challenge the assumptions (ethnic, cultural, gender) dominating our contempo
