Perhaps the best known, and certainly the most written about, Indian periodical was the Cherokee Phoenix, and Indians' Advocate, first published as the Cherokee Phoenix on February 21, 1828, at New Echota, Georgia. The Cherokee Council had provided for its publication in the fall of 1825, appropriated funds, and decided to send one of the tribe to the United States to raise funds with which to buy the equipment.
The man chosen to raise the funds was Buck Watie, or Elias Boudinot. Boudinot was born about 1803, the son of Oo-watie, or David Watie. Boudinot studied at Cornwall, Connecticut, under the sponsorship of the Philadelphia philanthropist Elias Boudinot, whose name he took. He married Harriet Gold, a Cornwall native. 1 In 1826 Boudinot lectured on the "progress" of the Cherokees, appearing in cities from Charleston, South Carolina, to New England. His speech at Philadelphia on May 26 was published as An Address to the Whites, in which he stressed the need for a tribal press. 2 With the assistance of the American Board of Foreign Missions, enough funds were raised to purchase the
