that interpersonal instruction and course offerings can be improved. Oneshot, one-dimensional assessment adds little to faculty understanding and provides students with only limited understanding of their intellectual, skill, and attitudinal development. Sound assessment can provide a wealth of information, invigorate the faculty, and contribute to the development of lifelong learners.

Clearly, there are many obstacles to effectively assessing instruction in interpersonal communication. These obstacles, however, can be addressed by carefully articulating outcomes, and then selecting or designing measures to evaluate success in meeting the outcomes. Now that we have recognized the importance of assessment through books such as this, we can work as a discipline, in departments and as individuals to enhance the process, and ultimately improve the instruction that we offer in interpersonal communication. (For an assessment overview and sample assessment plan see Appendixes A and B.)
