PREFACE

IT would not be right to send this little book out into the world without a few words of acknowledgement. First I must thank the Committee of the McNair Fund at the University of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, for the invitation to give the series of lectures which form the basis of this volume. Then -- if this is not too informal for a preface -- I should like to acknowledge the warmth of the welcome which I received there, and the tremendous encouragement that I was given, which made my stay in Chapel Hill so delightfully happy. Finally there are all those many friends, remembered and forgotten, whose words and thoughts have helped me to formulate my own, and who should really receive any credit that may be due. My debt to them is, for me, a continual reminder of the true life of the Christian Church, and of the communion of the saints.

In developing my general theme it seemed necessary, for the sake of continuity and completeness, to repeat a part of the argument which I used in my Riddell Lectures Christianity in an Age of Science at Durham, England, in 1953. Apart from this, and an occasional use of material in book reviews, the present discussion is original.
