In this gazetteer, the available fieldwork and notices (published by and before 1988) are arranged in alphabetical order. Wherever possible, the city, town or village name is the Heading, but, where this is not known, the entries are made under the general area, the county or the Region (the name for the unit of local government since 1975). In the few cases where no geographical clue is given, the entry is made under the name of the Source.

For the sake of clarity (though perhaps with some loss of interest), the material has been standardised on the following pattern:

Heading National Grid Reference Region (see Map 3)

Plural notices for a single location are listed, as far as possible, in chronological order of performance.
