Acknowledgments

This book emanates from the seminar Harm to the Environment -- The Right to Compensation and the Assessment of Damages, held in Turku/Åbo in June 1995. The aim of the seminar was to examine legal questions related to damage caused to the environment. Special emphasis was placed on damage to the environment per se, such as damage to wildlife and biota.

The seminar was organized within the research project Legal Responses to Environmental Harm which has been carried out at the Department of Law, Åbo Akademi University, Finland, since 1990, and which is mainly sponsored by the Academy of Finland.

Many individuals lent their helping hands in the task of editing and finalizing the book. In particular, I wish to thank Raija Hanski and Kristiina Vainio for their role in the editing process.

Last but not least, I am very grateful to the authors for devoting their precious time to this enterprise and to Oxford University Press for producing the final volume.
