Glossary
Aktion (also Action; Round-up): Raid against the Jews, often in a ghetto; the primary purpose was to gather victims for deportation to the Nazi concentration and extermination camps.
AK:Armia Krajowa, or Polish Home Army.
Appell (also Zählappell): Roll call in the camps.
Arbeitführers: Work leaders.
Aryan: The original purpose of the term was to designate and classify an Indo- European language group. The Nazis used the term to mean a superior, white Nordic heroic race, but, in fact, the term has no biological validity as a racial term.
Aufseherin: Work supervisor.
Blockälteste (f.), Blockältester (m.), Blockältesten (pl.): The barracks supervisor; a male or female prisoner functionary who was responsible for the prisoners in his/her barracks during roll call, for the distribution of food to inmates, and for order in the barracks.
Blocksperre: A curfew during which prisoners were not permitted to leave their barracks.
Blokowa (also Blokhova): Female supervisor of a block of barracks in a Nazi concentration or extermination camp. Sztubowa were assistants to the blokowas.
Boit'l: A small sack or packet; something similar to a pocket.
Canada (also Kanada): The depot where the personal effects stolen from the inmates were stored. It was called "Canada" because to the prisoners Canada represented unlimited abundance. Initially the goods were stored in five barracks; ultimately there were thirty such barracks.
Capo (also Kapo): A male or female prisoner functionary appointed by the SS; chief of a work battalion or some other branch of a concentration camp such as a kitchen or "hospital." Capos often were drawn from the criminals among the camp inmates.
