1 SHEPHERD ¶ Brethren, in haste take heed and hear
What I will speak and specify.
Since we walk thus certain and clear,
What makes my mood now move will I.
Our forefathers faithful who were,
Both Hosea and Ysaye,
Proved that a prince without a peer
Should descend down into a lady
And to make mankind clearly,
To heal them that are lorn,
And in Bethlem here by,
Shall that same bairn be born.
2 SHEPHERD ¶ Ere he be born in borough hereby,
Balaham foretold, I have heard say,
A star should shine and signify
With lightful gleams like any day.
And as the text it tells clearly
By witty men learned of our law
With his best blood he should us buy.
He should take here all of a maid.
I heard my sire once say,
When he of her was born
She should be as clean maid
As ever she was before.
3 SHEPHERD ¶ Ah, merciful Maker, mickle is thy might,
That thus will to thy servants see.
Might we once look upon that light,
Gladder brethren might no men be.
I have heard say, by that same light
