Networking Companies: From Basic Web Services to Business Extranet SolutionsDr.
Multimedia Software GmbH DresdenMany companies are currently in the process of discovering the great potential
of Internet technologies and how to use it for their business activities. The transformation of companies that are influenced by the Internet can now be observed
in areas such as the purchasing, marketing, and sales departments and customer
services (see Fetterman 1997), but also in the way in which companies communicate with each other and with their employees in Intranets and Extranets (see Hinrichs 1997). The branch structures change under the influence of the Internet
and a variety of new companies with innovative structures and processes are
developed in which the business models are based on the use of the Internet.Concrete characteristics range from web sites with company and product presentations up to electronic markets. Electronic markets are a good example for
innovative digital business models. They enable not only transactions such as
the purchase or sale of goods irrespective of time and space, but can be used in
order to raise demands in the forefield as well as for the customer care after the
actual transaction. Five steps can be distinguished (compare Gascoyne and Ozcubukcu 1997):
|• ||Information sharing in a company|
|• ||Creation of an online presence|
|• ||Begin to realize surplus value|
|• ||Moderate integration of systems with customers and partners|
|• ||Full integration of systems, services, and branches|
The various steps are distinguished mainly according to the type of technology
used and added value.
