ITEs as Teacher Substitutes: Use and Feasibility

1 Course-oriented Intelligent Tutoring Environments
In the 70s and early 80s the field of Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITSs) confined itself to attempting to tutor small topics in considerable detail. Sleeman and Brown ( 1982) were critical of progress, pointing out that 〉ITS has clearly abandoned one of CAL's early objectives, namely that of providing total courses, and has concentrated on ... more limited topics.=More recently a new trend is changing the CAL and ICAL fields. With digital multimedia on CD-ROM it is becoming apparent that computers will be able to teach and handle large quantities of didactic, first-time knowledge presented in an attractive and motivating way.
2 The Role of the Teacher
The approach to intelligent CAL has usually been to copy a human tutor in giving individual attention with a small topic. Most students are not taught in this way. They receive a much more 〉coarse grain= treatment from a class teacher, who aims the presentation at the average student. If a student has difficulty with a topic, there is little analysis of the problem - the student is simply told the correct way to do it. The objectives of the research described here were thus:
To build a whole-course (not single topic) intelligent tutoring environment
To base it on the human teacher
To build it as an Expert System which simulates the teacher
To use multimedia techniques to build an environment motivating for students
To evaluate the system with students
To make judgments on the significance of such systems for the future
