SELECT BIBLIOGRAPHY
To provide a full list of sources would be an unnecessary labour in a book not primarily intended for the student. I give instead a selection of main authorities consulted, for the convenience of any reader who may wish to meet the Laureates at close quarters. The place of publication is London unless otherwise stated.

The Works of Ben Jonson. 1816. This is Gifford's edition, still full of interest although superseded by the great Oxford edition.
The Works of Ben Jonson. Oxford, 1924-52. This magnificent work of editing, by C. H. Herford and Percy Simpson, is one of the finest monuments of twentieth century scholarship.
The Poems of Ben Jonson. Oxford, 1936. A handsome edition by B. H. Newdigate .

SIR WILLIAM DAVENANT
The Works of Sir William Davenant, Kt. 1673. There is no complete modern edition of Davenant.

JOHN DRYDEN
The Works of John Dryden. 1808. This edition by Sir Walter Scott, as re-issued at the close of the century by George Saintsbury, is still the standard collection.
There are many editions of the poems, the essays, and of selected plays; and many lives, and commentaries.
