Appendix: Example of Comparative Identification by
Abbreviated Watermark Description
Problem: Locate papers comparable with watermark of a capped man with tailcoat
(c.80 mm) holding club in raised right hand.
Search process: Using RIFM (assuming its existence), the keyword of the abbreviated
description would be 'Man (c.80)', leading us to entries such as these:
The match is closer with Fig. 1.4, because of the raised right arm and ornamented
frame. By then checking the location of the source of Fig. 1.4 ( Churchill, No. 759)
we have a promising new channel for determining provenance and authentication.
FIG. 1.4. Man (c.78 mm) in tailcoat and
rounded hat, in ornamented frame (c.109 mm),
with club in raised right arm and one-line shield
with crossed clubs in left hand. FIG. 1.5. Man (c.75 mm) in
tailcoat with stovepipe hat and
wig, on irregular ground holding
tool in raised left hand and in
right hand a hook-bordered
double-line shield (c.63 mm) with
crossed hammer and pick.
