INTRODUCTION

NOTWITHSTANDING the threatening dangers from whites and red men, Rising, emboldened by the hope of relief from home, writes with much of the same optimism in this second report, which is dated nearly a year after the first one.

The text of the report is from a contemporary manuscript copy in Swedish in the Kammararkiv (Archives of the Exchequer) in Stockholm, found by Dr. Amandus Johnson, and is now published, for the first time, in English translation by him. The Swedish text, edited by him, has been published ( 1910) in German American Annals, viii. 87-93, 288.
