the Los Angeles Subway Tunnels
Efforts to improve the transportation system of Los Angeles have resulted in the largest public works project in the country. Construction of the Metro Rail mass-transit system began in the late 1980s with nearly $200 billion earmarked for the project. The centerpiece of the 59-mile Metro Rail system is the Red Line, a nearly 20-mile subway that will eventually run from Union Station in downtown Los Angeles to North Hollywood ( Davis 1994). As of June 1998, approximately 6 miles of the Red Line had been completed.
